English Premier League - Beginner's Guide

There isn’t a more globally popular soccer league in the world than the English Premier League. Premier League fixtures take place every weekend between August and May, with the team topping the Premier League table being declared the champions of England.

You can learn more about the history of the league and some of the best Premier League players, as well as how to bet on the English top-flight in this beginner's guide.

Premier League History

English Premier League PlayersThe Premier League was formed in 1992 as a breakaway league from the old First Division. It replaced the top league in English soccer, which had been in operation since 1888. The Premier League was mainly introduced in order to take advantage of the lucrative television rights that were being offered in the United Kingdom.

It remains one of the most lucrative broadcasting deals in sport to this day, with companies such as Sky and BT Sport paying a combined fee of £3.1 billion per year. Nowadays, the league is the most–watched in sport, with Premier League fixtures being viewed in over 640 million homes across 212 territories. That means the fixtures played throughout the season have a potential TV audience of 4.7 billion people.

How to Bet on The Premier League

Making wagers on the Premier League action throughout the season is very popular, with all of the leading Australian soccer betting sites offering the option. Below, you can learn more about the betting markets available, and how to win wagers betting on Premier League fixtures.

Match Odds

English Premier League TeamsThe easiest way to make a bet on Premier League teams is by placing a bet on the Match Odds market. Here, you will be placing a bet on the outcome of the fixture. If your prediction is right, then you will gain the potential returns from the wager. Meanwhile, if your prediction is wrong, the stake will be lost. There are three options available in this market, and those are the home win, away win, and the draw.

Both Teams to Score

Making a wager on both teams to score is also extremely popular. Here, the bet will not be impacted on the final result, as the bettor will simply need both teams to find the net in the fixture. Bets can be placed on either ‘Yes’ or ‘No’. If you select the latter, then you will need only one of the teams to score in the Premier League match.

Correct Score

Bets can also be placed on the correct score market. Here, bettors must correctly predict the team that will win the fixture and the correct score in the game. Both factors must be correct in order to gain returns. However, the returns are typically larger, as bets will be placed on higher odds.

Premier League Teams Format

The Premier League is made up of 20 teams. Teams from England and Wales can compete in the top-flight, with each team coming up against every rival on two occasions; once at home, and once away from home. Meanwhile, the bottom three teams in the Premier League standings are relegated from the top-flight and are replaced by three teams from the Championship. The top two from the second tier are automatically promoted, while the third team achieves promotion courtesy of the playoffs.

At the top end of the standings, teams in the top-four places qualify for the Champions League, while fifth and sixth places qualify for the Europa League. The team that finishes seventh will be able to participate in the Europa Conference League. Teams are awarded three points for a victory, one point for a draw and zero for a defeat. If teams are locked level on points at the end of the season, then goal difference is used to determine the side that finishes higher.

Premier League Records

Since the formation of the Premier League, 50 clubs have played in the top-flight. The most recent addition to that list was made in the 2020-21 season, as Brentford played their first fixture against Arsenal.

However, only seven teams have been fortunate enough to win the Premier League title. Manchester United is by far and away the most successful, as they have won 13 top-flight championships. Meanwhile, Chelsea, Manchester City, and Arsenal are the only other clubs to win more than one. The Gunners are the only side that has gone through a Premier League season without being beaten, while City is the only team to have ended the season with 100 points.

The record for most appearances in the Premier League is held by Gareth Barry, who played in the English top-flight on 653 occasions across stays with Manchester City, Aston Villa, and West Bromwich Albion. Meanwhile, the player to have scored the most goals in the Premier League-era is Alan Shearer. The former Newcastle United and Blackburn Rovers striker scored 260 goals in 441 games. Wayne Rooney is the second-highest scorer with 208 goals.

Arsene Wenger is the longest-serving manager in the history of the Premier League, as he led Arsenal into fixtures on 828 occasions during his 22-year stay. Transfer fees have increased year on year in the Premier League, and ahead of the start of the 2021-22 season, the first £100 million player in the history of the English top-flight came to fruition when Jack Grealish left Aston Villa for Manchester City.
